What Is Major Medical Health Insurance?

Major medical health insurance offers comprehensive coverage to help protect you from high medical costs while giving you access to everyday care. This includes:

Doctor visits, emergency care, hospital stays, prescription medications, urgent care, mental health services, lab work, imaging, and more.

Most major medical insurance plans have specific enrollment times, but options may be available year-round depending on your situation. Two common types are Affordable Care Act plans and Medicare, which we’ll explain more below.

There are also alternatives — like short-term medical or indemnity plans — that you can get year-round. However, they’re not considered major medical because they’re not as robust and aren’t required to cover pre-existing conditions.

If you're unsure what you qualify for or need help choosing a plan, we're here to guide you every step of the way — including helping you verify if your medications are covered, checking if your doctor is in-network, finding in-network care, or answering any questions you might have. Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), commonly known as Obamacare, is a comprehensive healthcare reform law enacted in March 2010. Under the ACA, individuals and families may qualify for government help to lower their monthly premiums, and some may also get extra savings on out-of-pocket costs.

Depending on what you're eligible for, your monthly premium could be as low as $0.

Here are some of the basic requirements to qualify for coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA):

  • You must live in the U.S.

  • Be legally present

  • Not be incarcerated

  • File a federal tax return (or be claimed on one)

All ACA Marketplace plans include important health benefits like doctor visits, emergency care, hospital stays, prescription drugs, mental health services, preventive care, and more.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance program available to:

  • People age 65 or older

  • People under 65 with certain disabilities or health conditions

  • U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have lived in the U.S. continuously for at least 5 years before applying

Incarcerated individuals are not eligible for Medicare coverage while they are in jail or prison.

Most people can enroll starting 3 months before their 65th birthday, during their birthday month, and up to 3 months after.

Enrolling when you're first eligible may help you avoid late penalties.

There are four parts of Medicare; each one covers different types of care and services.

  • Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

  • Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

  • Medicare Advantage bundles your Part A, Part B, and usually Part D coverage into one plan.

  • Helps pay for the brand-name and generic drugs you need.

What affects your Medicare cost?
